เจ้าของร้านขึ้นป้ายประกาศ “ขายลูกสุนัข” ที่ประตูของเขา ป้ายนี้ดึงดูดเด็กๆ เป็นอย่างมาก โดยเฉพาะเด็กผู้ชายคนหนึ่ง ที่พอเห็นป้ายก็รีบวิ่งตรงเข้าไปถามเจ้าของหมาทันที
“น้องหมาเราเท่าไรครับ?”
เจ้าของร้านตอบมาว่า “มีตั้งแต่ $30 ถึง $50 จ้ะ”
เด็กชายหยิบเศษเหรียญออกมาจากกระเป๋า “ตอนนี้ผมมีแค่ $2.37 เอง… ผมขอดูพวกมันหน่อยได้ไหม”
เจ้าของร้านไม่ตอบยืนอมยิ้ม ทันใดนั้นก็มีแม่หมาเดินออกมาจากคอกหมาโดยมีลูกๆ ของมัน 5 ตัวเดินตามออกมา หนึ่งในนั้นมีลูกสุนัขตัวหนึ่งท่าทางแปลกๆ เดินขากะเผลกตามออกมาด้วย เด็กน้อยก็แปลกใจแล้วถามว่า “น้องหมาตัวนั้นเป็นอะไรครับ?”
เจ้าของร้านตอบว่า ให้สัตวแพทย์ตรวจดูแล้ว มันมีปัญหาที่สะโพก เดินเหินไม่สะดวกนัก
เด็กชายมีทีท่าตื่นเต้นแล้วบอกว่า “ตัวนี้เลยที่ผมอยากได้”
เจ้าของร้านบอกว่า “พี่ว่าหนูไม่อยากได้มันจริงๆ หรอก แต่ถ้าหนูอยากได้มันจริงๆ พี่ยกมันให้เลยก็ได้”
เด็กชายหงุดหงิดและบอกกับเจ้าของร้านว่า “ผมไม่อยากให้คุณยกมันให้กับผม น้องหมาตัวนี้ก็ค่าเท่ากับตัวอื่นๆ และผมจะจ่ายเต็มราคา ผมจะให้คุณ $2.37 ไว้ก่อน และให้อีก $50 จนครบราคาเต็ม”
เจ้าของร้านบอกว่า “หนู หมาตัวนี้มันพิการ มันวิ่งเล่นกับหนูไม่ได้เหมือนหมาตัวอื่นๆ นะ อยากได้จริงๆ หรอ”
เด็กน้อยสร้างความประหลาดใจให้แก่เจ้าของร้านโดยการดึงขากางเกงขึ้นให้เห็นขาเทียม เขามองไปที่เจ้าของร้านแล้วพูดอย่างนุ่มนวลว่า “เอาล่ะ ผมก็วิ่งไม่ได้เหมือนกัน และน้องหมาตัวนี้ก็คงอยากอยู่กับคนที่เข้าใจมันเช่นกัน”
A shop owner put up a sign “Puppies for Sale” at his door. The sign attracted many children, especially one boy who, upon seeing the sign, quickly ran straight in to ask the owner.
“How much are your puppies?”
The shop owner replied, “They range from $30 to $50.”
The boy pulled some coins out of his pocket. “Right now I only have $2.37… Can I take a look at them?”
The shop owner didn’t answer but stood there smiling. Suddenly, a mother dog walked out from the kennel with her five puppies following behind. One of them had a strange gait, limping as it came out. The boy was surprised and asked, “What’s wrong with that puppy?”
The shop owner replied that the veterinarian had examined it and found it had a hip problem, making it difficult to walk properly.
The boy showed excitement and said, “That’s the one I want!”
The shop owner said, “I don’t think you really want it. But if you really want it, I can just give it to you.”
The boy became upset and told the shop owner, “I don’t want you to give it to me. This puppy is worth just as much as the others, and I will pay full price. I’ll give you $2.37 now and $50 more until I pay the full price.”
The shop owner said, “Son, this dog is disabled. It won’t be able to run and play with you like the other dogs. Do you really want it?”
The little boy surprised the shop owner by pulling up his pant leg to reveal a prosthetic leg. He looked at the shop owner and said gently, “Well, I can’t run either, and this puppy will probably want to be with someone who understands it.”
