Sumeth was a young, young soldier

Dreaming of a little freedom

And the quiet life he’d seek

But the officer said, “Before you go,

Let me take a look at you.”

แต่ผู้บังคับบัญชาบอกว่า “ก่อนที่นายจะไป

ขอฉันตรวจดูตัวนายหน่อย”

เขาพูดว่า “ผมนายยาวเกินไปแล้ว

ไปตัดผมซะ ทหาร”

He said, “Your hair is way too long,

Go and cut it, soldier, too.”

แต่ร้านตัดผมปิดอยู่แล้ว

But the barber’s shop was closed

Like the doors of all his dreams

เหมือนประตู่ของความฝันทั้งหลายที่ปิดลง

เขายืนอยู่กลางแสงแดด

He stood there in the sunlight

Feeling smaller than he seems

รู้สึกเล็กลงกว่าที่ตัวเองเป็น

เขาฝืนยิ้มผ่านความเศร้า

He smiled through the sorrow

Said, “My boots are clean, sir, now.”

พูดว่า “รองเท้าบู๊ตของผมสะอาดแล้วครับผู้กอง”

บางครั้งเราได้แต่ขัดเงาที่หัวใจแทน

Sometimes you shine your heart instead

When the world won’t show you how

เมื่อโลกไม่สอนเราว่าจะทำอย่างไร

The officer looked down at him

ผู้บังคับบัญชามองเขาจากที่สูงลงมา

โดยไม่เห็นเรื่องผมเลยแม้แต่น้อย

Didn’t see the hair at all

Just the boots that caught the sunlight

เห็นเพียงรองเท้าบู๊ตที่สะท้อนแสงแดด

เขายืนตรง แม้ในใจจะรู้สึกเล็กนัก

Standing straight, though feeling small

“Next week, clean them first,” he said

“อาทิตย์หน้า ทำความสะอาดมันก่อนสิ” ผู้กองว่า

As Sumeth turned away

But deep inside, the soldier knew
