ณ กระท่อมเล็กๆ หลังหนึ่ง ในคืนอันหนาวเหน็บ ชายยากจนมีเพียงผ้านวมผืนเล็กๆ ที่เล็กเกินกว่าจะคลุมร่างกายของเขาได้หมด
เขาคิดว่าส่วนบนของผ้านั้นสั้นเกินไปและไม่สามารถคลุมศีรษะได้ เขาจึงตัดส่วนล่างของผ้านวมออกและนำมาเย็บติดกับส่วนบน เมื่อเขาเข้านอนในคืนนั้น ปรากฏว่าผ้านวมสั้นเกินกว่าที่จะคลุมขาของเขาได้
เช้าวันต่อมา ชายยากจน จึงตัดส่วนบนของผ้านวมออกแล้วนำมาเย็บต่อเข้ากับส่วนล่าง ซึ่งมันก็ยาวพอที่จะคลุมขาของเขาได้ แต่คืนนั้นตอนที่เขานอนอยู่ เขาก็ได้รู้ว่า ถ้านวมผืนนี้สั้นเกินกว่าที่จะใช้คลุมหัวของเขาได้ รุ่งเช้าถัดมา เขาจึงตัดและเย็บผ้านวมผืนนี้อีกครั้ง
ใช้ยากจนตัดเย็บผ้านวมสลับบนสลับล่าง เช่นนี้ทุกๆ วัน จนผ้านวมของเขาขาดเป็นชิ้นเล็กชิ้นน้อย และไม่สามารถนำมาห่มกันหนาวได้อีกเลย
In a small hut, on a freezing cold night, a poor man had only a small blanket that was too small to cover his entire body.
He thought the top part of the blanket was too short and could not cover his head. So he cut off the bottom part of the blanket and sewed it onto the top. When he went to sleep that night, the blanket was too short to cover his legs.
The next morning, the poor man cut off the top part of the blanket and sewed it onto the bottom, which made it long enough to cover his legs. But that night when he was sleeping, he realized that the blanket was too short to cover his head. The next morning, he cut and sewed the blanket again.
The poor man continued cutting and sewing the blanket, alternating between top and bottom, every single day, until his blanket was torn into small pieces and could no longer be used to keep warm.
