ชายคนหนึ่งเดินผ่านปางช้างแห่งหนึ่ง พบว่ามีช้างโขลงนึงไม่ได้ถูกขังไว้ในกรงหรือโดนโซ่ล่ามแต่อย่างใด

แต่สิ่งที่รั้งพวกมันเอาไว้ เป็นเพียงเชือกเส้นบางๆ ที่ผูกเอาไว้ที่ขาข้างนึง

ชายคนนั้นก็ยืนจ้องมองไปที่ช้าง ได้แต่คิดแล้วก็สงสัย ❝ช้างตัวออกโตขนาดนี้ เชือกก็อันกระจ้อยซะขนาด แต่ทำไมพวกมันไม่คิดจะทำอะไรเลย ยืนให้เขาล่ามไว้อยู่ในนั้น?❞

ด้วยความอยากรู้ เขาก็เดินไปถามควาญช้างที่อยู่บริเวณนั้นว่า ❝ทำไมช้างมันมัวแต่ยืนเฉย ไม่คิดจะหนีไปเล่าท่าน?❞

ควาญช้างจึงตอบมาว่า ❝เมื่อพวกมันยังแด็ก มันก็ถูกมัดด้วยเชือกขนาดเดียวกันนี่แหละ และด้วยอายุเท่านั้นก็ถือว่าแน่นหนาพอแล้ว แม้ต่อมาพวกมันจะโตขึ้น แต่เชือกบางๆ เส้นนี้ยังมัดขาพวกมันไว้อยู่ ทำให้พวกมันก็ยังไม่คิดจะหนีไปไหน เพราะใจของพวกมันเชื่อไปแล้ว ว่าเชือกเส้นบางแค่นี้ทำให้หนีไปไหนไม่ได้❞

เหตุผลเดียวที่ช้างมันไม่หนีไป คือใจมันเชื่อว่าไม่มีทางเป็นได้ ที่มันจะหนีออกมาได้

A man was walking past an elephant camp and noticed that a herd of elephants was not locked in cages or chained up in any way.

The only thing holding them back was a thin rope tied to one of their legs.

The man stood staring at the elephants, thinking and wondering, ❝These elephants are so big, and the rope is so thin. Why don’t they do anything? Why do they just stand there and let themselves be tied up?❞

Out of curiosity, he walked over to ask the elephant keeper in the area, ❝Why do the elephants just stand still? Don’t they think about escaping?❞

The elephant keeper replied, ❝When they were young, they were tied with a rope of the same size. And at that age, the rope was strong enough to hold them. Even though they later grew bigger, this thin rope still ties their legs. So they still don’t think about escaping, because in their hearts they believe that this thin rope makes it impossible to escape.❞

The only reason the elephants don’t escape is because they believe in their hearts that there is no way they can break free.
