ณ เมืองเล็กของในอิตาลีเมื่อนานมาแล้ว
เถ้าแก่เจ้าของธุรกิจเล็กๆ คนหนึ่งดันไปเป็นหนี้ก้อนโตในวงจรเงินกู้นอกระบบสุดโหดจากเจ้าหนี้ชราเขี้ยวลากดิน จนนำความซวยมาสู่ลูกสาวของตัวเอง
เจ้าหนี้ชราได้ยื่นข้อเสนอบางอย่างให้กับเถ้าแก่ เป็นเงื่อนไขให้ตัวเขาได้แต่งงานกับลูกสาวเถ้าแก่เพื่อแลกกับการล้างหนี้ทั้งหมด
(ให้ตายเถอะ เรื่องน่าขยะแขยงแบบนี้ก็มีด้วย)
ในความโชคร้ายยังพอมีความหวัง เจ้าหนี้ชรายังเปิดทางให้
❝เดี๋ยวฉันจะมีถุงผ้า 2 ใบให้หนูเลือกนะจ๊ะ ใบนึงมีก้อนกรวดสีดำ อีกใบนึงมีก้อนกรวดสีขาว ถ้าหนูเลือกได้ถุงที่มีก้อนกรวดสีดำ หนูจะต้องแต่งงานกับฉัน แต่ถ้าหนูเลือกได้ถุงที่มีก้อนกรวดสีขาว วาสนาระหว่างเราก็จะไม่เกิด.. อ้อ แล้วฉันก็ยังใจดีนะ ทันทีที่หนูเลือกถุงผ้านั้น หนี้ทั้งหมด ฉันยกให้พ่อหนูทันทีเลยนะจ๊ะ❞
ว่าแล้วเจ้าหนี้ชราก็เดินไปหยิบก้อนกรวดจากในสวนมา 2 ก้อน แต่กลับเล่นไม่ซื่อ ลูกสาวเถ้าแก่เหลือบไปเห็นว่าเจ้าหนี้ชราแอบหยิบก้อนกรวดดำขึ้นมาทั้ง 2 ก้อนใส่ลงไปในถุงผ้า
❝หนูเลือกใบไหนดีจ๊ะ?❞
ตอนนี้ทางเลือกทั้งหมดที่น่าจะเป็นของลูกสาวเถ้าแก่ น่าจะเหลือแค่ 3 ทาง คือ
| 1. ให้ตายก็ไม่เลือก แต่นั่นก็ไม่ช่วยให้หนี้หายไป |
| 2. หยิบมาทั้ง 2 ถุง แล้วพิสูจน์ว่าเฒ่าหัวงูคนนี้โกง แต่ตาแก่นี่ก็อาจจะโกรธจนไม่ยอมยกหนี้ให้พ่อ |
| 3. ยอมเลือกสักถุง แล้วตกเป็นเมียของเจ้าหนี้ชราไป เพื่อไถ่หนี้ให้พ่อ |
ทุกอย่างเหมือนจะเป็นเช่นนั้นจนกระทั่ง…
❝ว๊าย! แย่จัง…ฉันทำก้อนกรวดที่เลือกหล่นหายไปแล้ว เอาแบบนี้แล้วกัน คุณเจ้าหนี้ช่วยดูก้อนกรวดอีกถุงว่าเป็นสีอะไร ก็คงรู้แล้วล่ะค่ะว่าฉันเลือกได้ก้อนกรวดสีอะไร เพราะสีมันตรงข้ามกัน❞
ในขณะที่เธอเลือกถุงผ้า แล้วหยิบก้อนกรวดนั้นออกมา เธอแกล้งทำมันหล่นหายไปลงไปปะปนกับหญ้าในสวน
แน่นอนว่าก้อนกรวดสีดำอีกก้อนยังอยู่ในถุงผ้า แต่คำตอบเดียวที่เจ้าหนี้ชราจะตอบได้คือ ❝หนูเลือกได้ก้อนกรวดสีขาวจ่ะ❞ เว้นเสียแต่เจ้าหนี้ชราจะพูดความจริงว่า ❝หนูเลือกได้ก้อนกรวดสีดำนะจ๊ะ เพราะมันสีดำทั้ง 2 ถุง❞ ซึ่งมันก็คือการยอมรับว่าตัวเองโกงนั่นเอง
ด้วยเหตุนี้พ่อลูกที่เป็นเป็นหนี้จึงเหมือนยกภูเขาออกจากหน้าอก หนี้ก็หาย ลูกสาวก็ไม่ต้องเสีย
In a small town in Italy, long ago…
An old merchant who owned a small business fell into massive debt with a ruthless old moneylender, bringing misfortune upon his own daughter.
The old moneylender made an offer to the merchant: he could marry the merchant’s daughter in exchange for canceling all the debt.
(What a disgusting proposition!)
Despite this misfortune, there was still a glimmer of hope. The old moneylender offered an alternative:
❝I will give you two bags to choose from. One contains a black pebble, the other a white pebble. If you choose the bag with the black pebble, you must marry me. But if you choose the bag with the white pebble, we will have no connection… Oh, and I’m generous – as soon as you choose the bag, I’ll forgive all your father’s debt immediately.❞
The old moneylender then walked over to pick up two pebbles from the garden. But he cheated! The merchant’s daughter caught a glimpse of him secretly picking up two black pebbles and putting them in the bags.
❝Which one will you choose, my dear?❞
At this point, the merchant’s daughter seemed to have only three choices:
| 1. Refuse to choose – but that wouldn’t make the debt go away |
| 2. Open both bags and expose the old man’s cheating – but he might get angry and refuse to forgive her father’s debt |
| 3. Choose a bag and become the old moneylender’s wife to save her father from debt |
Everything seemed to point in that direction until…
❝Oh no! How clumsy of me… I dropped the pebble I chose and lost it. Tell you what – why don’t you check the other bag to see what color it is? Then you’ll know which color pebble I chose, because they’re opposite colors.❞
As she chose a bag and picked out the pebble, she deliberately let it fall and disappear among the grass in the garden.
Of course, the remaining black pebble was still in the other bag. The only answer the old moneylender could give was ❝You chose the white pebble.❞ Unless he told the truth: ❝You chose the black pebble, because both bags contain black pebbles,❞ which would be admitting his own cheating.
With this clever solution, the father and daughter were freed from their burden. The debt was erased, and the daughter was saved.
