เลนาอาศัยอยู่ในหมู่บ้านเล็กๆ ที่ทุกคนใช้โคมไฟในยามค่ำคืน มีโคมไฟที่ใหญ่และสว่าง บ้างก็เก่าและแสงไฟอ่อน เลนามีโคมไฟเล็กๆ แสงของมันนุ่มนวลและไม่แรงนัก เด็กคนอื่นๆ บางครั้งก็หัวเราะและพูดว่า “โคมไฟของเธอเล็กเกินไป มันช่วยให้เธอมองเห็นอะไรไม่ได้เลย!”

แต่เลนาก็ยังคงถือโคมไฟไปทุกเย็นเมื่อเธอเดินกลับบ้านจากโรงเรียน วันหนึ่ง พายุรุนแรงพัดเข้าหมู่บ้าน ลมพัดดับโคมไฟใหญ่หลายดวง ความมืดปกคลุมถนน และเด็กๆ เริ่มหวาดกลัว

เลนามองไปที่โคมไฟเล็กๆ ของเธอ เปลวไฟมันเล็ก แต่มันไม่ดับ เธอเดินอย่างระมัดระวังและใช้แสงไฟของเธอช่วยเด็กคนอื่นหาทางกลับบ้าน ทีละก้าว แสงไฟเล็กๆ นำทางทุกคนกลับบ้านอย่างปลอดภัย

วันรุ่งขึ้น เด็กๆ พูดว่า “เราผิดไป โคมไฟเล็กๆ ของเธอช่วยชีวิตพวกเราไว้!”

Lena lived in a small village where everyone used lanterns at night. Some lanterns were big and bright, and some were old and weak. Lena had a tiny lantern. Its light was soft and not very strong. Other children sometimes laughed and said, “Your lantern is too small. It can’t help you see anything!”

But Lena still carried it every evening when she walked home from school. One night, a strong storm hit the village. The wind blew out many big lanterns. Darkness covered the streets, and the children became scared.

Lena looked at her little lantern. The flame was small, but it didn’t go out. She walked carefully and used her light to help other children find the way home. Step by step, the small light guided everyone safely back.

The next day, the children said, “We were wrong. Your small lantern saved us!”
