วันหนึ่ง ลาของชาวนาตัวหนึ่งตกลงไปในบ่อน้ำ มันร้องโหยหวนอย่างน่าสงสารอยู่หลายชั่วโมง ขณะที่ชาวนาพยายามคิดหาทางแก้ไข ในที่สุดเขาก็ตัดสินใจว่าลาตัวนั้นแก่แล้ว และบ่อน้ำนั้นจำเป็นต้องถูกกลบไว้อยู่ดี เพราะมันไม่คุ้มที่จะกอบกู้ลาขึ้นมา
เขาเชิญเพื่อนบ้านทุกคนมาช่วยเขา พวกเขาคว้าพลั่วมาตักดินใส่บ่อน้ำ ตอนแรกลาก็รู้ว่าเกิดอะไรขึ้นและร้องไห้สะอึกสะอื้นอย่างหนัก จากนั้นทุกคนก็ประหลาดใจเมื่อลาสงบลง
หลังจากตักดินไปไม่กี่ครั้ง ชาวนาก็มองลงไปในบ่อน้ำในที่สุด เขาประหลาดใจกับสิ่งที่เห็น ทุกครั้งที่ดินถูกตักกระทบหลัง ลาก็ทำสิ่งมหัศจรรย์ เขาจะสะบัดดินออกแล้วก้าวเท้าขึ้นไป
ในขณะที่เพื่อนบ้านของชาวนาพยายามขุดดินทับสัตว์ตัวนั้นต่อไป เขาก็สลัดดินออกแล้วก้าวขึ้นไปบนดิน
ไม่นาน ทุกคนก็ประหลาดใจเมื่อลาตัวนั้นก้าวข้ามขอบบ่อน้ำและวิ่งออกไปอย่างมีความสุข!
One day, a farmer’s donkey fell into a well. It cried pitifully for hours while the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally, he decided that the donkey was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway, so it wasn’t worth rescuing the donkey.
He invited all his neighbors to come help him. They grabbed shovels and began shoveling dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone’s amazement, the donkey quieted down.
After a few shovelfuls of dirt, the farmer finally looked down into the well. He was amazed at what he saw. With every shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and step up.
As the farmer’s neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and step up.
Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and happily ran off!
